Name: Sprucekit/paw/whisker/star
Explanation: [Spruce] for his wiry body and light brown coloring; [-whisker] for his untimely seriousness
Gender: Tom
Age: 56 moons
Clan: GrassClan
Rank: Leader
APPEARANCE
Build: Very long and very skinny
Fur: light brown
Eyes: light green
Markings: cream chin
Overall:
As is expected of a GrassClan warrior, Sprucestar's build is long and exceedingly skinny; the short, tan fur that stretches tightly over his wiry body cannot hide his lack of bulk and meat. Thin, long muscles wrap like snakes across his body, designed for running and jumping and nothing more. Powerful legs carry Sprucestar high above the heads of enemy warriors, although he stands no higher than an average GrassClan warrior. A long, whip-like tail and a small set of ears serve to complete the effect; a cat built for speed and completely incapable of brute strength. In fact, Sprucestar has proven himself to be a poor close-quarters fighter; his strength lies in speed and agility, and there is very little that can be done for him once cornered.
Sprucestar's eyes are of a light, leaf green color and gaze from a face that is predominately tan, save for the small patch of white that adorns his chin. He holds himself tall whenever in public, his long tail curled above his head and small ears swiveling to catch every sound. Though his eyes rarely drop to his hard, padded forepaws, Sprucestar places each step with purpose and determination, a habit built from moons of hunting rabbits in GrassClan territory.

Other: Throughout his life, Sprucestar has proven himself to be a very formal, serious cat. He is altogether too quiet and watchful, and was always poor at making small-talk and chatting with other cats. Sprucestar has always taken life extremely seriously, and he carries himself in a way that shows everyone watching him that he is not one to partake in jokes or playing (except, of course, during a few rare moments). He enjoys being alone and contemplating different problems and solutions, and only a choice few cats can actually ease him into a real conversation unrelated to the welfare of the Clan.
Sprucestar is also very confident, and has no problems with self-esteem. Though this means he cannot be tricked by other Clan leaders into doubting his resolves, it is a double-edged sword; Sprucestar does not enjoy finding out that he was wrong or being told what to do, and struggles to take advice from others.

History:
--Kithood--
Born youngest of three to Sandstripe and Stormgaze of GrassClan, Sprucestar was the smallest and also the quietest of the litter. While Larchkit and Cedarkit wrestled and fought in the Nursery or sneaked out into the forest, Sprucekit sat in the shadows by the warriors' den and soaked up stories and information like moss. He rarely joined other kits in their games, and preferred to hang about elders or watch the apprentices getting ready for training. Deep down, all Sprucekit wanted as a kit was to become an apprentice.
--Apprenticeship--
And upon becoming an apprentice, all Sprucepaw wanted was to become a warrior. He was not so ambitious as he was determined; determined to serve his Clan, to be the most serious warrior, to be respected. This determination might have come out of the constant teasing he endured from his sister and brother, but whatever the reason, Sprucepaw clung firmly to it. He grew slower than anyone else throughout his apprenticeship, and he was far clumsier than the average apprentice; tripping over his too-long legs and extra-long tail. This gained him more teasing and, though the teasing was never mean-spirited, Sprucepaw took it to heart and grew even more eager to prove himself.
Even so, there was not much chance to prove himself. The time during his apprenticeship was peaceful, with few battle skirmishes and only the rare badger or fox to interrupt the quiet Clan life. Perhaps that was why Larchpaw and Cedarpaw sneaked out of the camp so often at night, searching for adventure. Sprucepaw tried to follow them, but he couldn't keep up and often fell behind. Sometimes he would press on and meet up with them, but usually he gave up and went back to camp. This was how much of their nights went; his siblings would sneak out, and Sprucepaw couldn't keep up. It was not until the very end of his apprenticeship that Sprucepaw truly began to grow into his body. By the time he stood before the Clan to receive his warrior name of Sprucewhisker, he had fully grown into his long legs and tail and, though he was not the tallest of cats or the fastest, he was exceedingly proud of his ability to keep up with the best of them.
--Warriorhood--
When they became warriors and took on more responsibilities, Larchwind grew out of her rebellious stage, but Cedarclaw never did. Sprucewhisker (aged 20 moons) and his brother were out on a hunting mission when Cedarclaw made the worst decision of his life; he followed a rabbit down into what appeared to be a large rabbit warren. Sprucewhisker, who had never had a head for close spaces, stood outside nervously, pacing back and forth as he waited for his brother to emerge. Finally, with a screeching yowl, Cedarclaw shot out of the hole and sprinted away; Sprucewhisker followed without question, though he chanced a glance over his shoulder at the last second and saw, to his horror, a huge, burly badger emerging from the hole.
The two of them ran all the way back to the camp, forgetting about hunting for the Clan. Throughout the trip Sprucewhisker watched Cedarclaw leave a trail of blood behind him, and the scent was thick in his nose. When they reached camp, Cedarclaw was sent straight to the medicine cat, and Sprucewhisker reported to his leader. A few moons later, Cedarclaw died from infection.
After this, Sprucewhisker became very protective of his remaining sibling, Larchwind. She and Cedarclaw had been as close as any two cats could be, and Sprucewhisker tried to fill the gaping hole in her life. Larchwind quickly became the only cat who could carry on a real conversation with Sprucewhisker, and for a long time she was perhaps the only cat he actually enjoyed being around. When Larchwind became pregnant with kits, Sprucewhisker vowed to protect them as if they were his own siblings. Two of the kits died shortly after birth, but the one boy, Birchkit, survived, ad Sprucewhisker swore to keep him alive.
This promise was put to the test far sooner than he expected. When Sprucewhisker was 30 moons old, a surprise invasion by BrushClan warriors sent the entire Clan into a frenzy; GrassClan warriors who had been caught off-guard scrambled to compose themselves as they watched the BrushClan warriors approach across the open field.
Though BrushClan was at a distinct disadvantage on the open terrain, many of the GrassClan warriors and apprentices had been hunting and training at the time of the attack, and had had no meal since morning. For the skinny cats of GrassClan, this was a terrible situation to be in; they had little energy to fall back on, and tired quickly. Sprucewhisker was no exception to this, and neither was the current deputy, Rabbitflight. The two fought side-by-side to protect the nursery, and when Rabbitflight was felled and taken to the medicine cat den, Sprucewhisker forced himself into action and urged his Clanmates on. Perhaps it was the surprise at hearing Sprucewhisker actually raise his voice above a murmur that startled the Clan, or perhaps the warriors were simply getting a second wind, but as Sprucewhisker yowled for his fellow Clanmates to fight on, they began to push back the warriors of BrushClan.
Finally, BrushClan fled, pursued hotly (and easily) by the more energetic warriors and apprentices. Sprucewhisker was not among them; he slipped into the nursery at once to make sure Larchwind and her kit were safe. Rabbitflight was heavily injured, and it became common knowledge that he would have to retire from his position sooner than expected.
Relations with BrushClan were tense for the next few moons, but when it was discovered that the current medicine cat had been lying about signs from StarClan telling the Clan to attack, the cat was banished and BrushClan were forgiven.
--Mentoring--
When Birchkit was six moons old, he was given to Sprucewhisker (aged 36 now) to train. The energetic, cheerful, charming young kit was as different from Sprucewhisker as the day was from the night, but somehow the chemistry was just about perfect between them. Birchpaw managed to capture Sprucewhisker's full attention and affection, and the two of them had a rocky but enjoyable and particularly peaceful six moons of training.
When Sprucewhisker was 42 moons old, shortly after Birchpaw became Birchstripe (in honor of his grandmother Sandstripe), a border skirmish between GrassClan and WaveClan grew heavily out of hand, leaving many cats injured. It was at this point that Rabbitflight realized he truly had to step down from deputy and become an elder--his injuries sustained during BrushClan's attack had left him limping heavily, and there were no signs that he was going to get any better.
To Sprucewhisker's surprise, Sunstar chose him as the new deputy on the grounds that his leadership during BrushClan's invasion and his solemn, non-impulsive ways were just what GrassClan needed to smooth over the tense relations with WaveClan.
--Deputyship--
Sprucewhisker's time as a deputy was relatively short. Sunstar had been on his last life when Rabbitflight became an elder, and the old leader was ailing clearly enough for all to see. Ten moons after appointing Sprucewhisker as deputy, Sunstar breathed his last and was taken into StarClan.
--Leadership--
And so, at 52 moons old, Sprucewhisker traveled to the Starlit Cavern and received his nine lives and the name Sprucestar. Four moons have passed, and relations with WaveClan are no better.
